CreateSpace: Losing my Mind!

I’m officially losing my self-publishing mind right now.ย  I’ve got this really amazing cool cover for Angst that CreateSpace keeps rejecting time and time again because I have “live” elements within .25″ of the edge of the page.ย  If anyone out there is a graphic designer, you’d know that using text as a graphic element isn’t anything new.ย  I’ve got words, other than my title or author name, and yes CreateSpace they do hang off the edge of the page andย  YES, it’s on purpose! OMG!!ย  I can’t believe a self-pubber would actually get that gutsy to use text as a graphic element!ย  WHOAAAA!

My KICKASS cover with text within .25" of the edge. OH MY!!!
My KICKASS cover with text within .25″ of the edge. OH MY!!!

The truth is that I’m losing my mind at the moment because they printed this cover before and now suddenly there are all these “problems.”ย  Suddenly it’s not the right size even though I haven’t adjusted the size of my document in InDesign?ย  It’s BULLSHIT!ย  And because I complained and had a note added to my file asking them to PLEASE pretty PLEASE don’t cut and paste into my spine, their reviewers are being even more stringent than ever before and nitpicking my file to pieces!ย  I fear that my relationship with CreateSpace is very very near its end.ย  Does anyone out there have any opinions on someone else to use?ย  How do people feel about Book Baby or Lulu?ย  Are their cover restrictions as crazy?ย  Any other printer in the world, you could have text elements that hang off the page, CreateSpace says they reject it every time because it might be an important “element” like my title.ย  Ifย  I’m that stupid that my title is hanging butt ass naked off the edge of the page and I don’t notice it in the PDF, I think I deserve myย  poor looking review copy and then I’d fix it.ย  Hello?ย  Do they assume that all people are idiots?

Please Blogosphere, review my cover? Do you see a problem here?ย  I think this is a pretty kick the fuck ass cover and yet, CreateSpace finds problems all over dodge.ย  Guess what CreateSpace, this self pubber is seconds away from pulling my title from you all together because you refuse to allow me to have the creative freedom that I want.ย  I know it’s pretty freaking amazing that an author designed her own cover and has her own idea of what it should look like, and yes…the Y and Z of crazy on the front cover hang off the page, TOTALLY on purpose (among other kick-ass elements that also dangle dangerously close to the edge of the abyss), I realize this BLOWS your freaking mind.ย ย  Thank you for sending me emails which enrage me within inches of my life on a SATURDAY night.ย  Thank you, thank you, thank you.ย  Please authors, help a sister out.ย  What are you using for your paperback copy? Keep in mind that I’ve also catogorized this post as “suidice” because CreateSpace is driving me to drink right now.ย  Self-help, my ass!ย  They are trying to rule my life with their stupid rules!ย  And the girl I talked to on the phone regarding this problem, just kept spouting the party line…we can’t, we can’t, we can’t.ย  Well guess what?ย  I CAN’T publish with you anymore.ย  Goodbye!

    1. Ha I wish. I used to think so…and yes that part is plenty hard…in fact the entire process is set up so that you will fail. Or else go through extreme moments of happiness and downright misery and despair. It’s a rollercoaster. Weeeeee!!!

I think that’s why my novel is simmering on the back burner while I write blog posts about how to give commencement speeches and coffee enemas.

        1. Yeah adding this kind of stress to your life is insanity. However I just caved and moved my “live text elements” in so that I could just get this done and stop thinking about it. My artistic integrity..out the window. But my sanity, hopefully still intact unless they reject it again. And interesting that you are telling people how to give coffee enemas!! HAAAA.

Oh wait!…that was a run on sentence. I wrote one on how to give a commencement speech and another one ABOUT coffee enemas.

          2. I love it. Missed punctuation etc and you’ve got a whole different meaning!

Makes you wonder how horrific my novel would be if I ever finished it.

  2. Can’t offer advice, but I wanted to say I love the cover, and I hope you get it sorted out one way or another.

    1. Thank you! I hope so too. I could just succumb to their demands and move all my “live” elements in by .25 inches. Sigh. I don’t want to listen to the “man!”

  3. sorry hun, wish i had some advice for you. My cover is pretty plain compared to yours. but I had someone else do it for me, i have no idea of such things. I would say call them. I had more luck when I wanted to change paper color by actually talking to them. Then, the situation got resolved. it IS a kick ass cover. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Well thanks for saying that! I did call them but I guess they hold hard and fast to this rule of no text within .25″ of the border…so this morning I sucked it up and fixed my cover and hopefully they won’t reject it again. I’m just too tired to do otherwise! haaa. Win some and lose some I guess!

  4. Oh that is annoying! I wish I had some advice but I haven’t worked with Createspace. Perhaps you can bump the word crazy up and then pull the Z and Y tails down that way they still hang off but show more of the tail? Just a thought! Sorry your having so much trouble.

    1. Thanks Casey! I did actually succumb and change it by moving the “live” elements up, like the Z and Y. So annoying! But I didn’t have the energy to figure out how to set my book up with an whole new printing company. So…it is what it is, I guess. ๐Ÿ™‚
